Children are a valued part of GBC and our Gateway ministry aims to nurture them in their faith and encourage spiritual growth. Whilst we offer provision for all children at both services, we primarily get under 11s at the 9.30am service and 11+ at the 11.15am so this shapes much of what happens.
We have 3 groups that cater for children from 0 – 10 years with older children becoming helpers in the Academy. We start together with a time of worship and prayer before splitting into the age specific groups – material used is written in house and over a period encompasses stories from both the Old and New Testament, always pointing back to God and Jesus. The weekly ‘take away’ means that learning can be built upon at home with parents in the coming week:
Little Urchins: Paddling with Jesus (0-3 years) ~ taking a relaxed approach, our youngest members listen to the Bible story over a snack and drinks and then have an opportunity to do a simple craft, listen to music, dance and have a time of play.
Starfish: Going a little deeper (4-6 years) ~ following a similar pattern to Little Urchins, there’s slightly more structure to this group with a greater variety of activities including reading the bible, praying and more challenge to get them thinking and asking questions.
Oysters: Taking a swim – making pearls in the kingdom (7-10 years) ~ this is our oldest group where not only are they encouraged to read the bible for themselves but explore the stories through discussion, drama etc allowing opportunity to interpret and communicate learning in their own way.
Those coming along to the 11.15am service who are under 11 follow the same material as the 9.30am service but do so together in one group. For the shape of ministry for those over 11, please go to the Life Youth Ministry section.
All of our adult leaders and helpers are DBS checked and we operate a Safe to Grow policy which includes details of our Child Advocate.
